Divine Dark Chocolate Chunk Brownies

Brownies 2

The No Kid Hungry bake sale is one of my favorite events of the year – which is why I’m bummed it took me this long to tell you about it! But alas, the bake sale happened to fall at the same time as both finals and a major freelance project. Oh, and normal work. Woof. (I know, I know, you’re all sick of me complaining how busy I am when it’s self-inflicted. Sorry.)

I always credit the NKH bake sale as what got me started blogging, back when I first met Maggy, Amber, and Lillian. It’s exciting to see the same group of blogging friends year after year now, and to watch the sale grow from a folding table outside of Kiehl’s to a central booth at the Brooklyn Flea. We’re movin’ on up, guys!

Rosemary & Sea Salt Olive Oil Cookies

rosemary cookies 2a

Remain calm. You are, in fact, on the correct blog. These cookies are definitely unique–and very different from what you’re used to seeing on this blog. There’s no butter in them. No brown sugar. They’re downright savory cookies. But y’know, they happen to be Charlie’s hands-down favorite thing I’ve ever made. So I figured they warranted a blog appearance.

Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookie Pies with Nutella Buttercream {World Nutella Day}

nutella cookie pies2a

Happy World Nutella Day! Each year on February 5, the organizers of this wonderful foodie day encourage chocolate hazelnut lovers the world over to post their tastiest recipes featuring Nutella.

Last year I brought Nutella granola to the party…but this year I wasn’t feeling quite so healthy. ;)

These cookies combine the chewy, bright sweetness of butterscotch and oatmeal with the deeper richness of a Nutella buttercream filling. Don’t say I didn’t warn you–these little pies pack quite a punch!

Triple Chocolate Quick Bread {{Giveaway}} [closed]

chocolate loaf 3a

One of my favorite things about Valentine’s Day is the chocolate. PSA to my boyfriend (as if he didn’t already know): a holiday that encourages the consumption of chocolate in any form provides you with a guaranteed way to make me smile.

I know we’re still a couple of weeks out, but I figure some of you out there might be trying to plan a treat to make for the ones you love on February 14. Dare I suggest this triple chocolate quick bread? You can serve it as a sweet breakfast-in-bed item, or break it out for dessert (top it with a scoop of ice cream–calories consumed on holidays don’t count).

Brown Butter Kitchen Sink Cookies

I’m a stress baker.

You can all sympathize, right? I’m thinking specifically of my senior year of college, just before winter break, when I had one massive exam the next day. Let’s be clear–I was an English major. We didn’t do exams. We did papers. Write you 15 gorgeous pages on Joyce’s Ulysses? Sign me up. Multiple-choice questions, concept IDs, and timed short answer questions?! Not. So. Much.

So there, I was, trying to memorize a semester’s worth of political philosophy in one night, and what was I doing? Melting butter, measuring sugar, covering our apartment kitchen in flour, and adding an extra handful of chocolate chips.

Mocha Pinwheels and the Twelve Hours of Baking

VLUU L210 / Samsung L210

My heart is still hurting. I, along with many other bloggers, joined in a Day of Silence yesterday for the victims of the unspeakable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, but it still doesn’t feel like enough. I know that I’ll never be able to comprehend the grief of all those affected, but my thoughts and prayers and tears have been with them since Friday. I can only hope that my children will live in a world a little less fearful than this one.

In honor of the spirit of family, friends, and love that is still so much a part of this season–now perhaps more than ever–I’m honored to bring you a guest post from a very special friend. Frequent readers will remember Cayce from our cake baking adventures, cupcake tastings, and her impending wedding, and today she’s sharing with you one of her family’s most treasured traditions (as well as a recipe): The Twelve Hours of Baking.
