As in, at this time of year legitimately half of my kitchen table is taken up by Tupperwares FULL of cookies from various swaps, holiday parties, and baking adventures. I bring a lot of it to work and try to foist off my sweets on my coworkers (usually they’re only too happy to oblige). I send some to my mom and my sisters. Other times, I just force myself to have an extra cookie for dessert…and second dessert. It’s a hard life I lead, I know.
Can you tell by the three exclamation points that I have really been looking forward to this day?? Cookie swapping is one of my favorite events of the holiday season, and I love that it always introduces me to new bloggers who eventually become social media friends. (Hi to all mypreviousyears’matches!)
Anyway. This year I decided to go super traditional with my cookie choice. You know me — I love throwing random baking chips and/or candy in my cookies. The more sweet stuff, the better. But this time I went with an indisputable winner: ginger molasses cookies.
Remain calm. You are, in fact, on the correct blog. These cookies are definitely unique–and very different from what you’re used to seeing on this blog. There’s no butter in them. No brown sugar. They’re downright savory cookies. But y’know, they happen to be Charlie’s hands-down favorite thing I’ve ever made. So I figured they warranted a blog appearance.
I know I am not the first blogger to say this, but I am really ready for spring. I sat in my office on Monday and watched snow blow in off the river all afternoon. I want to put my boots away. No more scarves. No more hair frozen on the subway platform during my morning commute. No more nearly dropping my work phone because I can’t grip the slippery little devil with gloves on.
When a few of us New York bloggers welcomed Erin of The Spiffy Cookie to our city last weekend, we were lucky enough to see sunny skies. But as you’ll be able to tell from the photos, that didn’t stop us from needing to bundle up against the blustery breezes. Hey March—you’re supposed to go out like a lamb. Didn’t you get the memo?
You can all sympathize, right? I’m thinking specifically of my senior year of college, just before winter break, when I had one massive exam the next day. Let’s be clear–I was an English major. We didn’t do exams. We did papers. Write you 15 gorgeous pages on Joyce’s Ulysses? Sign me up. Multiple-choice questions, concept IDs, and timed short answer questions?! Not. So. Much.
So there, I was, trying to memorize a semester’s worth of political philosophy in one night, and what was I doing? Melting butter, measuring sugar, covering our apartment kitchen in flour, and adding an extra handful of chocolate chips.
My heart is still hurting. I, along with many other bloggers, joined in a Day of Silence yesterday for the victims of the unspeakable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, but it still doesn’t feel like enough. I know that I’ll never be able to comprehend the grief of all those affected, but my thoughts and prayers and tears have been with them since Friday. I can only hope that my children will live in a world a little less fearful than this one.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Cookie baking time! And well, Christmas time, but cookies and Christmas have always sort of gone hand in hand for me.
One of my favorite blogger events of the year is the NYC Cookie Swap, which has been held for the past two years at Hill Country NY. The spread this past Sunday was–if possible–even more incredible this year, and I loved hanging out with the fabulous crowd of attendees.
Today is an exciting day! Know why? A group of lovely food bloggers (spearheaded by the fabulous Brandy and Brandi) have joined together to celebrate Rachel, of Rachel Cooks! She’s expecting her baby boy in just a few weeks, and since we can’t all just show up at her house in person with treats, we’re throwing her a shower Internet-style. 🙂
I know you’re all sick to death of me talking about the weather, but as I type this, the snow is still dripping from the boots I kicked off as soon as I walked in the door of my apartment. It was, for all intents and purposes, blizzarding sideways as I trudged home from class tonight. Can someone please explain to me what bizarre weather continuum I’ve entered?
